Attack on Titan TACTICS is a free-to-play real-time strategy mobile game based on the popular anime series Attack on Titan, wherein you get to play a cool simulation of the struggles of humanity against the monstrous Titans. A Japanese manga originally released in 2009, it became highly popular and gained an anime series and even tons of game adaptations. The story follows an alternate reality in which giant beings called Titans roam the earth and the last of humanity is hidden behind three large walls to defend them from the man-eating monsters. Eren Jaeger had witnessed tragedy when a Colossal Titan breached two of the walls and killed his mother. He vowed to join the military to eradicate all Titans and five years later, he successfully joined the Survey Corps to start his mission.

Unlike the other Attack on Titan games, this game features real-time strategy gameplay reminiscent of a tower defense RPG. Similar to how the characters did it in the original anime, you need to defend your walls by deploying your units on the battlefield as the wave of Titans come towards you—all without waiting if you’re ready. Attack on Titan TACTICS has several game modes: Story Mode, Character Episodes, and time-limited Events. Story Mode is the main campaign of the game and follows the first season of the anime. You get short cutscenes and dialogue before having to go fight Titans on various stages to unlock the next part of the story. Character Episodes, on the other hand, are short character-focused original side-stories that complement the narrative of the anime and give you extra information about your fave characters.
Gather the Squad
Attack on Titan TACTICS is also a gacha game, so you’ll have to roll and summon dozens to times to unlock all of the available character units in the game. The cast of the anime series comes back alongside their popular voice actors to give original voice-overs recorded exclusively for this game. There are over 50 playable characters—which surprisingly include battlefield artillery like cannons—each with their own unique attacks, abilities, roles, and special skills. All units can be leveled up and be useful to you but they still have their own strengths, weaknesses, and limit breaks so you need to group your squads well for the different attack patterns the Titan use to fight you. Some units stay on the field for a long amount of time, working as your primary frontline fighters, while others target specific body parts or stay around long enough to execute a single Titan before leaving the field. The Titans themselves come in various sub-types and there are even Boss Titans you’ll have to face.
The Game the Fans Needed
As a mobile game for an anime, Attack on Titan TACTICS is surprisingly well-designed and caters to various types of players—even to those who haven’t read the manga or watched the anime yet. The real-time strategy gameplay can be a bit difficult to get used to those if you like turn-based more, but it gives you enough time to learn the mechanics. There’s not a lot of level-grinding, as well, since you can get Skip Tickets that let you sweep stages for materials without manually fighting again. Its Daily Missions allow you to get various items for free as long as you complete objectives and the in-app purchases aren’t overly bloated so you can advance through the game without using real money. Probably the only gripe you could make about this title is its silly-looking 3D character sprites and clunky UI. If you’re an AOT fan, this is a highly recommended game to try.
